Have a look at the Studiologic Sledge, it is affordable (at least in France, Germany...), it's the same kind of synth. Of course it is not a clone, it has 3 oscillators instead of 2, you can load sampled waveforms to one oscillator to replace the classic saw - square - sine, and it has "one knob per function". On another hand the modulation routing is less complex , neither inboard sequencer nor the "free EG" of the AN1x. Avoid the first rev., the "Sledge 2" is a lot better, 24 voices instead of 12, no more software bugs.... for the same price range. OK, it has a flashy yellow case...
Obviously it does not sound exactly like an AN1x, more like a Waldorf (the sound engine is designed by Waldorf), but i 've only heard some factory sounds. It is played by Jordan Rudess of Dream Theater, or the ex Yes keyboardist Geoff Downes, it could be worse...
A lot of today's V.A.s have a powerful sound engine but with ridiculous mini keys : Novation, Roland... it's a shame. Dave Smith's products are expensive in Europe, and more "high end" oriented instruments.
