With any gear purchase-when in doubt buy both. Techno and dance musicians need fresh sounds and the AN1X is a sound designer's dream. Once you get a handle on the modulation matrix and all the features, you can design a huge range of impressive noise. It's nice to have knobs and the ribbon controller is wonderful. That being said, you need to know that the AN1X isn't multi timbral- you only get 2 different sounds. If you want one box for all your dance music needs-this isn't it. Also, the AN1X LFOs and delays don't synch to MIDI. That's a big drawback for dance musicians. The ASR and it's older brother, the Ensoniq EPS 16 are hip hop main stays. Good tools for laying out beats. Buy the cool red ASR and program some beats, then get the blue Yamaha and actually bang on some keys and turn some knobs. Dance music Nirvana. There's lots of user presets in the file section. Rainbow Jimmy http://www.spaceanimals.com http://www.mp3.com/spaceanimals
