don't panic about MIDI ! In fact it is a fast (relatively) serial port , 
as the USB* or RS 232 ports of your computer , and a communication 
protocol between different instruments . Each has his address , the 
"midi channel" , sends and /or receives data . Some are "public" , like 
the notes played or the controllers positions (if any) and others 
"restricted" to an instrument , the famous "sysex messages" that allows 
you to store or load "patches" (in fact the sound generation programs) 
for example or the device settings (play mode , channel ...) .

* USB is much more faster than MIDI . Maybe the future standard 
connexion between electronic musical instruments ? I don't think so , 
the higher speed is not necessary ; the main MIDI limit is the number of 
possible channels (16) ....
