Problem morphing between scenes on AN1X

Problem morphing between scenes on AN1X

2007-12-29 by Gwyn Evans

Hi there. I am new! I have had an AN1 for some years and I am finally having the time to use it properly.

I have created my own noise, a bass noise using both VCOs and based on the default Type 2 noise the system offers you when you start creating.

I wanted quickly to copy scene 1 to scene 2 so that scene 3 could differ in pitch by an octave. This does not appear to be possible, in that I tried it, but it didn't do anything (i.e. I went into scene 2, and attempted the copy but it simply refused to do it, despite appearing as though it was doing it.

So I manually copied it.

My question is this: I want to morph between the two bass sounds, and when I set either the modulation wheel or one of the assignable Knobs to SceneSel, it just alternates between the scenes, without morphing between them.

I think that there is a setting wrong somewhere that is stopping it from behaving in the way that I expect: does anyone know what that setting is?

I have changed the layer mode from single, to dual, to unison etc etc, and depressed both scene buttons, but it is still not doing it.

Any advice would be gratefully received.

Many thanks

Gwyn

Re: [AN1x] Problem morphing between scenes on AN1X

2007-12-29 by Jeff

Hello Gwyn!
To copy data from another voice to a scene:

    * hold the "scene1" or "scene2" switch and enter the number of the
voice whose data you want to copy. The screen will display this
number flashing together with "sceneX load?"
    * Press "yes" (or "no" if it's a mistake!), that's all.

To swap both scenes (ie sound data are exchanged between "scene1" and
"scene2") :

    * hold the "store" switch and press both "scene1" and "scene2"
switches. The screen will display "Scene 1<->2 Swap" with "sure?"
      flashing
    * As previously press "yes" or "no".

To "morph" between both scenes the continuous controller (modulation
wheel = MW) must be assigned to "scene control" ( Scene Ctrl on the
screen) and not "scene select" (Scene Sel) . In the last case the mod
wheel only toggles between the 2 scenes like the switches as you
mentionned, in the first it is defined as a continuous controller
allowing to mix both sounds depending on its position. To check which
controller is assigned (if any..) to the Scene Control (i.e. "morphing"
or "mix") hold both scene switches, it will be displayed on the screen.
N.B1.: this "morphing" function can be assigned to any continuous
controller, not only the mod wheel, for example a foot controller, with
a pot inside like an expression pedal, not a simple switch as the
sustain pedal. However this simple pedal switch can be assigned to
something else than the sustain, assuming this parameter does require
only a 1 or 0 value.
N.B.2: The "sustain" pedal can be any fitted with a "normally closed"
type momentary switch and a mono jack : you can find it easily (music or
electronics stores) and cheaper than the Yamaha "FC something" model....
NB3: Caution! The continuous foot controllers are a little bit more
complex, if they will fit or not depends on the pot ohmic value and the
jack wiring !
Xmas greetings
J.F.

Re: Problem morphing - thanks Jeff + response

2007-12-30 by gwynforevans

Hi Jeff: thanks for your comprehensive reply.

I worked around this, as mentioned in both mine and your other emails
yesterday, but I wanted to comment that I do not have the option in
Utility Setup Device or Ctrl No to select "Scene Ctrl". Only
"SceneSel" is available in both menus in the relevant place, it being
number 3 in the list of 90-something controls. Number 4 is blank, as
are several others in the list.

It may be my OS version or something (it displaying "TEST MODE V 1.02"
when I start up and hold down 0 + and - together.

Secondly, the copying of the scene did not work even when I followed
to method you suggest below! I *can* swap, and I *can* copy from
other voices, I just cannot copy scene 1 to scene 2.

Many thanks for your help,
Gwyn

Re: [AN1x] Re: Problem morphing - thanks Jeff + response

2008-01-01 by Jeff

Hello!
do you have the (awful) user manual?
I'll take a look at my own synth for your OS problem (mine is maybe
different...) and to see how i managed to morph between 2 scenes.
Because i did it: for organ sounds it works well because both sounds
have the same pitch ; i've tried to morph 2 different typical synth
sounds (VCOs sync'ed, filter sweep and so on) and, one being 1 octave
lower just as you've tried to do, i got the same results than you, the
pitch changes when you move the mod wheel.
Be patient: these days i'm more in the kitchen and parties (i'm french,
nobody's perfect) than behind my keyboards, and my motorcycle needs some
brake pads change!
Happy new year to you all!

RE: [AN1x] Re: Problem morphing - thanks Jeff + response

2008-01-01 by Ed Edwards

Hmm... I don't find the manual awful at all. It's just another technical
journal trying to describe how to create musical sounds. Tough task.

To get scenes to morph without pitch interruption, you've gotta match the
oscillator octaves. Yep, the manual doesn't state this. But it is a fact
and now you know it.

Another thing that can sound ugly when trying to morph is when the ring
modulator is used. Nasty unmusical things can happen. But if you're trying
to make an effect rather than a playable tone, this could be a good thing.

Re: [AN1x] Re: Problem morphing - thanks Jeff + response

2008-01-02 by Jeff

Hi Ed !
the manual is not pedagogical, too difficult for the absolute beginner
and sometimes lacking of informations for the advanced user. For the
first the "AN1x stater guide" is a must, for the latter a reference
manual with all the sysex codes, tech specs and so on would be useful.
But maybe these were distributed with the brand new synth, now they're
quite all second hand , often sold without any docs. And there is no
logic in the order of the items, you must jump from page 31 to page 95
then back to 42... I've downloaded the "starter guide" and a refrence
manual, this done i'm feeling better...
The Casio CZ series or Kawa\ufffd manuals (i have both) are 10 times more
"user friendly" and nevertheless exhaustive.
Season's greetings!
J.F.

To copy Scenes between Voices:
1. Hold [SCENE 1] (or [SCENE 2] and enter the number of the voice whose Scene data you
want to copy. The selected voice number flashes in the LCD.

2. Press [YES/ENTER] to execute the Scene Load operation, or [NO] to cancel it.

To use this function correctly, keep in mind you are initiating the copy from the
destination Voice/Scene and choosing the Source Voice/Scene. Make sense? This does
_not_ work *if* you want to copy Scene2 from a Voice to Scene1 of another Voice. You will
need to Swap Scenes in the source Voice beforehand:

Scene Swap Function
1. Hold [STORE] and press both [SCENE 1] and [SCENE 2] switches. "SURE?[Y/N]" flashes in
the LCD

2. Press [YES/ENTER] to execute the Scene Swap operation, or [NO] to cancel it.

*Make certain to Store the resulting Voice before resuming with your Scene Copy.

No, it works the same under v1.02 as the other release levels.

See above explanation - you cannot copy Scene 1 to Scene 2 or Scene 2 to Scene 1 of
individual Voices unless you perform a Scene Swap in the source Voice beforehand - and
Store the results - prior to the Scene copy.

I think you had a question regarding Scene Morph too, which I think you've resolved by
now, but for the record:

> My question is this: I want to morph between the two bass sounds, and when I set
either the modulation wheel or one of the assignable Knobs to SceneSel, it just alternates
between the scenes, without morphing between them.

This is correct if you want to use SceneSel, but not to Morph between Scenes in a Voice.

Try the following instead:

1. From UTILIT/SETUP menu, choose Ctrl Device - set MW to 1: Mod Dpt using the Ctrl No
button to select from the available MIDI CC numbers.

2. Now scroll the available choices in Ctrl Device until you reach SCENE - set SCENE to 1:
Mod Dpt using the Ctrl No button to select from the available MIDI CC numbers.

3. Pressing both [SCENE] switches simultaneously activates the Scene Control function,
which lets you "morph", or cross-fade between Scenes in real-time using the assignable
[MODULATION] wheel, an assignable Foot Controller, or any other continuous controller.

If you want to use a controller other than the Mod Wheel to Morph, the repeat step 2 and
change SCENE using the Ctrl No button to select from the available MID CC Numbers
