Question about System OS (newbie here)

Question about System OS (newbie here)

2012-05-10 by angelstoxx

Hi everybody. Im a new and proud owner of the blue beast. Recently purchased it for 250 euros in a very good shape.
Im looking all the updates etc but i cant find andy OS update. I power up holding 0 - + and the screen says 1.01 and then 02.Battery . Shall i presume first that i will need a battery replacement soon? And now the main question. is there a stable OS update and if yes what does it do..
And last. What if i want to import sounds from different users. Say a user has 20 sounds and another has 10, how will i import these sounds in a row e.g. 0-20 and 20-30 so it wont replace each other? Silly me but forgive me, managed to find everything without reading the manual and im stuck in this one.

Kind regards to all and looking forward to your help
Thnx
Vangelis

Welcome to the club !

Im looking all the updates etc but i cant find andy OS update. *The
"O.S." is inside an EPROM. Some say it is still available by Yamaha ,
others say no, it seems different from one country to another. We once
had a discussion about "cloning" the last revision (the empty EPROM
itself is cheap) but we didn't go further, because of possible copyright
issues and who has the time and hardware programmer necessary for the
task. *

Shall i presume first that i will need a battery replacement soon? *Yes.
Type CR2450, available in any electronics shop ... *

is there a stable OS update and if yes what does it do.. *The different
O.S. revisions correct minor bugs, the last one is 1.04. I have 1.03 and
no special trouble.*

What if i want to import sounds from different users? *A lot of sounds
are available on the website, but you need an editor (AN1x edit or
similar) to load them in your synth. AN1x edit was free, but according
to some people does not work properly with Win 7 or Vista (similar
problems with the different Mac OS revisions). I use it successfully
with Windows XP SP3. Be careful too with your USB - MIDI interface, some
are said to be unreliable or even unusable (why ??) with AN1x edit*.*I
think there is a topic on the website...*
*You can try "CTRLR", a multi instrument editor with an AN1x user
interface. Never tried because i'm happy with AN1x edit, at least until
today, maybe it will crash or hang up after some Windows update ...*

Cheers.

Hi,

Congratulations on your purchase. The AN1x is still a special synth, and I wouldn't be without mine.

I wouldn't worry about an OS update unless you see any specific problems. A few years ago a contact in Yamaha UK said that they still had some AN1x OS update EPROMS, so if you want to update you might wish to try the Technical Support department at Yamaha Kemble UK to see if any are left.

If you wish to organise AN1x patches and swap them between files, you might like to check out my an.factory librarian over at www.xfactory-librarians.co.uk.

Cheers
Derek

Re: Question about System OS (newbie here)

2012-05-12 by Eric

I recently got an AN1X, OS version 1.02. I've been using AN1XEdit v1.1 (a free download from several locations), with an M-Audio Uno USB/MIDI interface on Windows 7 64-bit with no trouble. The only issue I've encountered is that occasionally when I'm sending a patch to the keyboard, the process will hang, and I'll need to restart both the keyboard and the computer in order to get them talking again. This happens maybe once out of 50-100 transfers.

One easy way to load the keyboard up with patches you like from the user libraries here is to double-click a patch in AN1XEdit, which will cause it to be transferred to an edit buffer in the keyboard. You can decide whether you like it, and if you want to keep it, use the keyboard to store it in whatever slot you'd like to overwrite. Thanks to everyone who's contributed such great patches over the years!!!!

Re the keyboard itself, the LED's flicker a bit, especially while in arpeggio/sequence mode, but I haven't noticed any other issues with it. Pretty good for its age. Mine had a recently replaced battery, it doesn't sound like a difficult job.

Cheers,
  Eric

Re: [AN1x] Question about System OS (newbie here)

2012-05-13 by Jeff

Hi Vangelis !
if it was me i should not worry about an OS update if everything is OK.
The new revs correct only minor bugs (blinkering leds on some patches,
too early "battery low" etc...). Change your battery, check if
everything works...
I have no longer access to an EEPROM programmer at work, because it was
discarded. I did not knew they wanted to throw it away ... OK it's an
old technology , but for maintenance purposes ... i guess they should
buy a new one if necessary.
For the sound patches you can cut, copy, paste ..;etc.. in AN1x edit, to
edit a complete sound bank, or you can load an individual patch in any
memory location of your synth. AN1x edit is downloadable for free .
Possible issues come with the latest Win. revisions (Vista or Seven) or
with some USB - Midi interfaces, likely those who need a specific driver
software, but not all of them. Strange indeed. I use personnaly a very
simple Prodipe 1 i/o "interface" (let's say "cable") successfully, with
any of my instruments. OK it's a very basic one, but perfect for up or
down loading patches or sequences.
Cheers.
J.F.
P.S.: For Windows revision troubles you can go to "properties", then
"compatibility mode" and choose and older windows (95, 98, 2000 etc..)
type, a lower screen definition and so on . It could work....

Re: Question about System OS (newbie here)

2012-05-15 by Eric

Hi Vangelis,

Like others have been saying here, the OS for the AN1X is held on an antiquated EPROM chip which can't be reprogrammed without removing it (and even then only with specialized equipment which is mostly found in landfills now). There is some information at this thread, http://www.yamahaforums.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=4013.

I wonder why you are concerned about this, is the keyboard not working properly? Everyone seems to agree only minor changes were made after the version you have. It seems like finding a working editor is more important for you. Sorry, I wasn't clear that you had a Mac, can't help you there.

Cheers,
  Eric

Hello, I'm new to the group, myself. I haven't had time to go through
all the posts yet, so please forgive me if this is something you've
seen before.

I'd been wondering about Mac OS editors, myself. I came across
something called SoundQuest / MIDI Quest - apparently an Editor /
Librarian for both Windows (32-bit and 64-bit XP) and Mac OS X (10.4
and up - Intel and PPC (Universal Binary)). http://www.squest.com/Windows/Instruments/YamahaAN1x/index.html

I am personally wondering if anyone out there has already had
experience with this one. It seems a bit pricey [$249 and up for Mac
and $89 and up for Windows, if I'm understanding their order form
correctly.]... I'm going to try out the demo, but am wondering of
anyone else can tell me, if you found it helpful in actual long-term
use?

Ah, thank you both for the response. I'm picking up my AN1x tomorrow night! I found info, tonight, about manual programming vs. editor programming. I previously thought that I needed an editor to access "hidden" features - now that I know that's not the case, I realize I can relax a little bit. I'm going to try ctrlr and look into the Logic set-up, but I'm perfectly willing to learn the board's own interface. I should be up and running, shortly. Thanks for your responses!

The updated roms to V1.04 are still available from Yamaha uk and Germany.

i have posted the address before and contact details.

call on Yamaha 0844 811 1116 then option 4

I did this and they actually refunded the entire amount back to me once i had
returned the old roms. I did this 2 months ago.

Re: Question about System OS (newbie here)

2012-05-19 by derek192603

Hi,

I am currently working on a fix to get an.factory working on OSX Lion - OSX Lion Java MIDI support is screwed. I have it working, but am currently doing some testing. I hope to have this released in a few weeks.

Keep an eye on www.xfactory-librarians.co.uk for info.

an.factory is a librarian and file editor, not a patch editor, but I am thinking of doing the latter as it gets harder to run the original software on modern systems. Being Java based, then I support both PC and Mac. So, if there is enough demand it might help formalise my plans to work on an editor.

Cheers
Derek

The only issue I've encountered is that occasionally when I'm sending a patch to the keyboard, the process will hang, and I'll need to restart both the keyboard and the computer in order to get them talking again. This happens maybe once out of 50-100 transfers.

You can decide whether you like it, and if you want to keep it, use the keyboard to store it in whatever slot you'd like to overwrite. Thanks to everyone who's contributed such great patches over the years!!!!

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
