The Yamaha AN1x Synthesizer mailing list

hey people,

what would be a decent hardware sequencer for me to pick up to play 
around with that is relatively inexpensive. I hate Cakewalk and 
Cubase. Too much crap to messa round with and fill my screen. Give me 
something tangible in my hands to trigger my keys. Once upon a time I 
had an Alesis MMT8, but that's a midi recorder.

I want some suggestions from some of you, please...I'll appreciate 
very much.

Hi Darren,

Have a look into both the Roland MC-505 and also the Yamaha RM1x. Both are
available quite cheaply 2nd hand now.

From all reports the RM1x has the stronger sequencing abilities, using 16
Tracks + a better LCD screen layout to work with.

The MC-505 (despite its reputation) arguably features a better synth engine
(essentially the same as the JV series) but only works with 8 tracks
(although you can get 8 extra tracks playing with its Realtime Phrase
Sequence function - ask me about it).

I own an MC-505. Please feel free to bombard me with questions!

There's not that many hardware sequencers around...in fact there are none,
but there are samplers/workstations/grooveboxes that have sequencers in
them. The only ones I can come up with are...

Akai MPC2000 / MPC2000XL ( I recently bought a 2000XL...I start writing
tunes with that sequencer and finish them with Cakewalk (it can
import/export files in standard .mid format!)...I haven't been this
prolific songwriting-wise in a long time!)

Yamaha RM1x  - Yamaha's answer to the Roland MC505, but despite its ugly
looks, it's gotten a lot of praise on the net and a lot of people seem to
like it.

Roland MC505 - I don't know if this can play external MIDI tracks...

Ensoniq ASR-X Pro: Ensoniq's answer to the Akai MPC. A better sampler than
the MPc, but an inferior (and not very reliable) sequencer.

The RM1x is a box i use as the heart of my midi setup. Though some people
seem to have to get used to the way of hardware sequencing, i myself got
fully into midi once i had the blue box. I hated the software sequencers.
You can find a lot of info on the http://listen.to/rm1x page. You'll find
plenty of links, samples and especially the review page might be interesting
for you. And though most people hate the internal sounds of the RM1x, you
can get it really going once you found the FX and voice edit. Anyway FWIW i
like the blue box.

Hardware and software sequencers are generally different...Just about all
software sequencers are linear, meaning you have to start at the beginning
and work your way (or copy and paste) until the end. Hardware sequencers
are mostly pattern-based. 

I've worked with both. I started out on a Korg SQD-1 sequencer back in the
'80s (it was actually a linear sequencer, I only got it cos it was one of
the few sequencers at the time with a disk drive). Then I used the built-in
sequencer of the Ensoniq EPS for several years, until 1995, when I finally
got a MIDI interface for my PC and got Cakewalk.

The advantage of a pattern-based sequencer is that you pay more attention
to song arrangements, and since you're working with various sequence files
strung together, it makes you think of different ideas for different
sections. The down side is that it's limiting -- in most cases you have a
finite amount of tracks, and you can't have audio recording or print out
sheet music or the like.

The advantage of software sequencers is completeness and control. You can
simply use your mouse to correct a bad note or chang ethe velocity levels.
And most software sequencers today have audio recording integrated in. The
down side is that since you're working on a continuous stream of music,
you're more likely to make the music more repetitive. 

Now, I use both. I program my basic drum beat or loop assignments on my
Akai MPC2000XL, then export it as a .mid file on a floppy disk and open it
in Cakewalk on my PC. Then I paste whatever I did on the MPC onto Cakewalk,
and expand on it by adding other instruments, audio tracks, etc. I read
about some hip hop/R&B producer doing that some time ago, where he starts
the basic tune on the MPc and exports it to his software sequencer. I love
working this way!

is a badass piece of gear in my opinion....it does a hella'lotta

I have a QY70. It doesn't qualify as a pure sequencer, since it has a
built0in tone module. Controlling external MIDI devices on it is a pain in
the ass, unless you either turn the volume down or program in some sysex
commands. But I love my QY for composing, I've written some cool tracks
while riding on planes and trains...

I used an MMT-8 for a couple of years - back when they were new. It
is indeed a MIDI Sequencer - and quite a good one at that. The timing
was dead-on too.  I don't understand your comment "but that's a midi 
recorder." What is this suppose to imply? All MIDI Sequencers are MIDI
Recorders. I don't understand the point :-)

Roland now makes the MC-80 Seqeuncer but it is pricey. I think you
can add one of those JV expansion boards to it. The MC50 MkII is
still 
around. Check some of the online etailers for remaining inventory.

The Kawai Q80 and Q80ex are a good bet. I think you can still find 
Q80ex info at the Kawai website. The Q80 can be had 2nd hand - cheap! 
It doesn't have all the buttons the MMT-8 does but then again it does 
have disk storage (which the MMT-8 does not.)  

The RM1x is a solid bet for a hardware sequencers as is the MPC2000.  
The ASR-X series sequencers is okay for playback and as a scratch pad 
but it is not real responsive to real time mutes, etc. The
underpowered 
CPU short changes the ASR-X sequencer. But as a sampler it's much, 
much better than the MPC but that's an entirely different story...

Dear Mango (also to anyone who may feel the same),

  Yes, I do as a matter of fact know many people that use the style of 
vocabulary that I tend to use in E-mail.  The above said vocabulary may not 
be the most articulate of forms, but a style that keeps my boredom with 
writing E-mail to a minimum.  Please excuse me, it must be an American thing. 
 From this point on I will compose my writings in a mathmatical arrangment 
for hightened staleness and sterility.  I'll carefully calculate every word 
that graces my fingertips as if they were from a periodical or perhaps a 
science journal.  Sorry if before perhaps I didn't have the time to create 
rough drafts of my E-mails beforehand and not speak the first things that 
came to my mind (mental note: always remember, supress individuality).

For this I am sorry to one and all.

I'm not sure if that you realise that the fundamental respect
for individuality is not there when you throw words like "Nazi" around yourself.
A poor choice of words, obviously you do feel the urge to dramatize and take into
extremes your statements. Well, let me tell you something then.... extremism
loses it's power over time, it's because people get used to it, while moderation
doesn't lose anything overtime.

FWIW you can write your letters in your socalled "heightened staleness and
sterility" if you like, although i don't suppose you are serious about your
proposal, but perhaps it is adviceable to say that some moderate consideration
from your part would probably also suffice.

Not at all, you may use patterns on Cakewalk (clips) and do linear sequences
w/ the RM1x...

I agree w/ you...software sequencers are far easier to edit. I started w/ an
Yamaha QX5 (a long time ago) but I stoped using it since I got my first
Cakewalk.
Now I'm also planing to record some audio from my AN1x...

Yamaha Nazi??? A week ago my setup was: CS2x + QX5 (retired) + TX16W...all
from Yamaha.... Then I sold the CS2x and the QX5 and got the AN1x (I should
bought a Korg Z1 for the same price)!! Oh, I forgot to say that before I buy
my CS I was using a borrowed DX21 as a "controler"...but at least I have a
Roland stiker on my car's windshield...:-)

What about the Roland MC 50mkII/80? They're out of production? Darren should
also take a look at the Roland MC307, as far as I know it have the same
sequencer and more waves (all and more, including the nice drums) then the
MC505, but is cheaper since it doesn't have some features like the
DBeam(unfortunately that cool pattern mix function, wich I can't recall the
name, is also missing)...

I'm not tending to take any side on this issue, but "bad names" are things
the you may hear in any movie or even TV shows and we all learned it when
we're kids at the school...It's not THAT offensive at all (There's an CS2x
patch called Badass!). Most of the people that use this kind of words are
nice people. I'm shure that Clinton didn't called "that part" of Monika's
anatomy as vagina, but he still the president of USA. But on the other hand,
as Mango said, many adults don't like this kind of behavior too....
I don't want to offend you, Mango, but you may filter your e-mails that use
this kind of words if you're using the Outlook and even the Netscape e-mail
client...and we all should keep our individuality, I mean the ones that
cares and the ones who don't....

I think there's a cultural conflict here. When Americans use "Nazi" (and
I'm using the word as an example, okay!) as a typical adjective, it usually
means someone who is blindly over-zealous, hence the US TV show "Seinfeld,"
which had an episode where there was a character described as the "soup Nazi."

I understand that in certain parts of the world, especially those who were
actually affected by the actions of the real Nazis, it's not as humorous,
especially if there are people on this list whose ancestors were killed by
the Nazis. But it's easy to forget that. Here in the U.S., there's little
reverence and respect for anything, especially history, so a term like
"Nazi" becomes a funny insult, since America was not as directly affected
by the Nazis. Yes there are people in America who call themselves "Nazis"
and espouse a belif system based on the original early 20th Century
National Socialist party of Germany, but we consider them to nothing more
than freaks who appear on the "Jerry Springer Show" -- again an object of
laughter.

Speaking of old World War II terms, I do recall someone, when talking about
music instrument manufacturers talk about the Japanese manufacturers, and
uttering, "Well that's the Japs for you..." I'm not sure whether there is
anyone on this list who is of Japanese ancestry but I could understand
where a similar issue could arise because of that.

Hi Jan,

I still thinking that the best way to avoid some offenses is filtering the
e-mails we receive using our own e-mail clients...I don't care about this
kind of words since I use them too, so remember that Ash was talking about
an piece of gear and used "that word" in a figurative way, not meaning to
offend anyone, but there were a thread called "American are
ignorants"...here you'll find two clues for what I'm trying to say: It was a
big joke...they were kidding w/ each other (without any offense), I used to
laugh reading those messages, and the word "ignorant" isn't a badname at
all, but also can be offensive...

I agree. We can use profanity repsonibly here. It provides emphasis when no
other word would have the same impact. HOWEVER, I do think that people who
utter vulgarity in every sentence are rather low on the evolutionary scale,
and that I do think that if people here get into debate, direct name
calling and threats using vulgarity shouldn't be tolerated (there are more
intelligent ways to flame someone).

I thank all those who gave me tips and thoughts on the sequencer
question. I appreciate it very much.  With regard to the Alesis MMT8 I
once had and never really got to fully use before I sold it (or do I
still have it somewhere at home, back in Canada, I don't
remember)...anyway...Jon...you're right. I guess I didn't really think
about it before I said it.
