SV: [AN1x-list] AN1xEdit v1.1

2001-04-12 by J Acker

Just to add another voice...I am amazed that such a great program is free! I've bought software for a good amount of money that were terrible, user-unfriendly, and jsut had tons of stupid features, or lack thereof...your software falls into none of those categories. It is easy to use, looks elegant, works extremely well (I have a problem getting MIDI back from my An1x to the PC, but that isn't the programs fault...I think it is my sound card) and gives an incredible value...

The visual representation is fantastic. I learned, by just playing with it, which parameters in the envelope were value based and the one that was time based. It just is amazingly well done. THANK YOU!!

Re: SV: [AN1x-list] AN1xEdit v1.1

2001-04-13 by Reggie

I personally think that AN-edit has one thing missing, and that is a
bank/Prg select feature that would allow all users, (Plg users
especially) to access the onboard sounds/User presets without having to
dump Sysex to the card each time they change instrument. Don't get me
wrong though, I am more than happy with AN-edit as it provides the only
real interface for the PLG AN/SW1000XG setup.

Again, Gary has done a good job. It would be much nicer if they came as
a 'Plugin' for VST/Logic/cakewalk etc. With decent integration though, I
think that is the only real problem that I have with the XG/AN-edit
software, and it's no fault of Gary's either as such, just a failing in
the sequencer software itself not being able to cope! I don't thing I
have EVER seen one of Gary's program's crash.

OMPS is supposed to do this sort of thing, So lets hope Gary is busy
programming some killer apps with an even more user friendly and
automated GUI!!!!

Oooooooh, I can just see those filters and VCF attack/release knobs
moving around on their own! :)

Hi Group,
I think the question is a resounding when?
I think everyone will agree that both Xg-Edit & An-edit are marvellous Interfaces for the card's, But what we need is a one stop application to control both cards in Vst etc.etc.
Can you shed any light on the situation Gary?
                      Take care Rich

Reg, I don't follow? Are you saying you want AN1xEdit to issue
program change commands to the AN1x when a Voice is
selected from AN1xEdit? Do you have to dump the entire SysEx
to the PLG card each time you simply change programs?! I don't
understand the design limitation of the PLG150AN well enough
to follow...

The VST concept for the PLG150AN is an interesting idea and
seem inline with some current trends. Doesn't NI now bundle
VSTi's of Reaktor and Dynamo along with the stand alone
versions? Is this where you're coming from? Accessing the card
from a plug-in front end?

*Reminder to the list*

Reg has created some AN1x Cubase Mixer Maps and they can
be found in the Files section. There's a Logic Environment (from
Yamaha) in the "qdisc" Voice set (check the Yamaha U.K. folder)
and a PLG150AN Logic Enviroment at http://www.swiftkick.com
There's Cakewalk stuff too. Someday I may even polish off my
reworked AN1x enviroment - need - more -- hours ---- in - a -----
day....

Nope, just the sysex for a patch at a time if you want, but otherwise,
there is no way in AN-edit to get at the factory banks(2x128) and User
Banks unless you can send bankmsb/lsb/prg for the voice that you want.
Once you send that patch data to the synth there is no way to get at it
in an easy manner.

I know AN-edit is an editor, but it is such a simple thing and would
mean a great deal to a lot of PLG users, After all, if you are sending
just bank/prg to the PLG AN the change is instant and doesn't tie up the
midi buffers, and you can still use AN-edit to edit the sound once you
have uploaded it, or use the matrix if you have set it up.

You can get at them in VST5 with a script I wrote, for just this reason.

RE: [AN1x-list] AN1xEdit v1.1

2001-04-13 by Gary Gregson

To answer the recent questions concerning AN1xEdit:

First thanks for the praise...its always nice to know the work is
appreciated :-)

Regarding the comment about an AN1xEdit for Sound Diver. Michael Haydn did
ask me to produce an adaptation for SD some time ago. Unfortunately,
commitments to other projects at the time prevented me from taking up the
offer :-(

Regarding using Cakewalk with the PLG150AN and AN1xEdit. If you want to be
able to select edited patches from within Cakewalk, then you must first
upload your edited library bank to the PLG150AN card (using the library
Select all and Send commands). Thereafter you should be able to select the
patches using standard Bank/Program change messages from CWPA.

Regarding Reggies comments on AN1xEdit being able to send Program changes.
AN1xEdit was never designed as a realtime sequencing control surface for the
PLG150AN card and certainly not as a means to select preset patches from the
cards ROM (other than for morphing control). In general I recommend people
use AN1xEdit solely as a voice editing tool and librarian. If you want to
perform real-time control of an AN device I suggest you make full use of the
Matrix feature of each voice. Thereafter upload the voice to the device and
use your sequencers capabilities for patch change and controller editing to
perform realtime control. This way you will minimise the amount of sysex in
the MIDI stream and get much better (and natively editable) results. You can
also make better use of external controller surfaces (e.g. control freak,
phatboy, AN1x knobs etc)

If you are going to work on sound editing, then you want to ensure that what
An1xEdit has, is the same as that in the AN device. Therefore it is
essential that An1xEdit selects the data from its own library and uploads it
to the AN device. (in the case of the PLG150AN there is no way to dump in
the reverse direction....so its the only way to synchronise the editor and
the card). In any case, the time taken to upload a single patch to the card
is comparable to the time it takes the card to select and configure a preset
patch internally.....so there is no real benefit to simply providing a
program change!!!

Regarding integration of editors into third party environments. I totally
agree with this approach; the current standalone app approach is too
inflexible and complex.

I am working with Yamaha, Cakewalk and Microsoft on a new MIDI plugin API,
that will provide this functionality (Open MIDI Plugin System - OMPS).
Hopefully this will allow full integration of plugin editors, such that they
can perform realtime automation, transmission via the clients MIDI ports and
direct editing of data within the clients tracks. The specification is
nearing completion, so we hope to see some apps using it towards the end of
the year! Whether, Steinberg, Emagic or other vendors adopt the format is
purely up to them...but they are certainly aware of its development. I guess
in the end it will depend on the quality and quantity of available
plugins....and to some extent end user pressure :-)

It should be noted that the API can also be used for other purposes. For
example OMPS can be used to produce:

- Alternate plugin data views (e.g. replacement list, piano roll, score
views etc)
- Authoring tools (such as data and format checkers)
- Complimentary sequencing functions (such as auto accompaniment and
generative music sequencing)
- MIDI processors (delays, appregiators, transformers etc)
- Softsynths (sample accurate MIDI streaming, for rich MIDI control of audio
plugins)

Note the API will be totally open and there will be no need for precompiled
libraries or licensing fees etc. So any budding programmers will be free to
create their own plugins :-)

Of course I would like to release versions of An1xEdit and XGedit in this
format....however if/when I do this will depend on commitments to other
projects in the future.

Regards

Gary Gregson

SV: [AN1x-list] AN1xEdit v1.1

2001-04-14 by J Acker

This is just an idea,

But if you wanted to make some money, (I don'tknow how many were sold, but that could easily be found out) and could easily adapt the source code for the Anix Edit, you could make a similar interface for, for one example the DR770 Drum machine.
The user interface (manually..not using MIDI) is pretty difficult. I've seen a similar one that is out for the DR660, and am amazed that they never even bothered to market a PC interface for the DR770. It is a great drum machine, but almost impossible to keep track of the drumkits, user patterns, songs...and it is REALLY easy to delete things you didn't mean to. also very difficult to clean up...you don't dare erase a user pattern until you go through each song and make sure it doesn't refer back to it.

Anyway, it is just an idea. I know a lot of folks on the VS880 (Roland recorder) list that would be interested, I know I would buy it...and I am willing to bet a high percentage of folks that have bought the DR770 would buy it.

Just an idea.
