roland or yamaha

2001-08-16 by alciere@midmaine.com

Keyboard Magazine thought that Yamaha had a lot more features for the
buck over the Roland. Sound is another issue, very subjective. For
me, the cost, the # of keys, the control matrix, and the aftertouch
make the Yamaha a more useful synth. The Roland has more knobs, but
how many knobs do you need? The free EG is also very useful. I agree
that the fattest sound is not always the best. With the Pulse width
mod, the various filters etc, you can get a nice thin cutting sound
from the Yamaha. Metallic glassy sounds also are easy to program. I
bought my Yamaha for $500.00 brand new. I have never, in 20 years,
ever seen a synth that comes anywhere near this kind of power for
that kind of money.

I don't like a lot of the presets. To me they sound very 70s
progressive rock, while I'm looking for 70s funk and 90's effect
sounds. I think the presets turned a lot of potential buyers off. Bad
news for Yamaha. Good news for me.

i'd love to hear some of the sounds you've dialed in--could you upload some
when you get a chance?

cheers,

Agreed wholeheartedly! :)

By the way, are you aware that the AN1x was released with different sets of
patches for different markets. You may have received the "70s
Progressive Rock Signature Collection"! ;-) Check the files section at the
AN1x page at yahoogroups and you may find the other set. Not sure if they're
on there though.

Is this set on the files pages?

Just thought I would ask.

Thanks,

Linda

Hi Linda,

The Yamaha UK Voice sets are available in the Files section. I *think*
the set you're after is named 'Vintage' - maybe 'Illusion'.

There's been some duplication of files - where users have reposted the
Yamaha voice sets not knowing they were already there. No big deal but
I haven't made time to clean-up recently.

Check this directory:

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
