roland or yamaha

Keyboard Magazine thought that Yamaha had a lot more features for the buck over the Roland. Sound is another issue, very subjective. For me, the cost, the # of keys, the control matrix, and the aftertouch make the Yamaha a more useful synth. The Roland has more knobs, but how many knobs do you need? The free EG is also very useful. I agree that the fattest sound is not always the best. With the Pulse width mod, the various filters etc, you can get a nice thin cutting sound from the Yamaha. Metallic glassy sounds also are easy to program. I bought my Yamaha for $500.00 brand new. I have never, in 20 years, ever seen a synth that comes anywhere near this kind of power for that kind of money. I don't like a lot of the presets. To me they sound very 70s progressive rock, while I'm looking for 70s funk and 90's effect sounds. I think the presets turned a lot of potential buyers off. Bad news for Yamaha. Good news for me.
