I've had the same problem on an IBM PC. I traced it and as far as I can tell it is a weakness in the soundcard in my case. They are known to have a problem and I've had the same problem with my drum machine. Some places I visited mentioned a converter box that could solve the problem and it was named something like "opto-isolator".

I haven't fixed it yet on my machine.

All,

A shame about the MIDIsport on the Mac. On the PC side of things, the
MIDIMan gear is very stable; in fact I've found my MIDIsport 8x8 USB to be
more stable than the (parallel port) MIDI Quest Note1 that I used for
several years, and at least as stable as the joystick interface on most
sound cards.

USB was supposed to be the great MAC-PC unifier, but it just doesn't seem
to be happening. Almost all the MIDI manufacturers seem to have great
expertise in one side, much less in the other. When I was shopping for a
USB 8x8, the candidates boiled down to MIDIMan and MOTU, since Opcode's
site clearly states that they don't support Win98SE or Win2K (!).

I checked the website, and the MOTU Windows USB drivers were listed as
"coming soon". I called MOTU support, and didn't get a good feeling about
the situation, so I held off a bit. After a second call, went with
MIDIMan. Good thing, too: The WDM drivers were finally released on
8/14/2001 -- a little more than a year after I bought my MIDIsport, and
almost 16 months after I called MOTU!

So much for the "universal interface" ...

Regards,

-BW

If memory serves the person who suggested the 'opto-isolator' cable(?)
was reasonably confident in the solution. I'm still of the opinion you
should spend on a dedicated, reputable MIDI Interface.

BTW - Martin, Eric - this thread has really gone off into a couple of
tangents :-) haha LOL ha ha Has any of this been of help? Did either of
you get AN1xEdit to receive a transmission from your AN1x?!?

Well, I feel a bit foolish. I was working on a kind of chilled house
track over the weekend, and tried to send a voice from the synth to
the editor. Once again the "Receive error" came up, with the options
of "Try again" and "Cancel". As usual I pressed "Try again" several
times, just to see what happened, and, er, well, this time it worked.
No idea why. Probably, in fact, just because I'd brought it up here.
Like when you take your car to the garage because it's making a funny
noise, except that when you get there the noise has stopped. Ho-hum.

Thanks to all concerned for the input,
Mart

this may or may not apply to your situation, but i found that requesting the
dump from the synth too early would result in an error message, i would have
to wait until the an1x finished the send before starting the request on the
editor

Yeah, could be. I was requesting from the editor without even telling
the synth to dump, so maybe that's what it was all about. This seems
to work if you just tell AN1xEdit to keep trying every time the error
message comes up, until eventually, hey presto, it works

Though I'll probably find that it's all gone to pot again next time I
try it......

This still isn't right - neither of you should have to manually
initiate a bulk dump from the AN1x for AN1xEdit to receive. I've NEVER
done any such thing other than to a generic sysex bulk librarian. This
implies the send dump command transmitted from AN1xEdit to your AN1x is
not getting through...

you're right you only have to send the request from edit, but saving the
voice on the synth first is still necessary

Which was, of course, my original problem.

I'd never tried dumping from a synth to a computer editor before I
got the AN1x, so I had (or have) no idea what I was (am) talking
about. Now it strikes me as logical that if you have an editor that
can request data from a synth, then that's all you should have to do,
i.e. request from the editor, not send from the synth, as it were.
Because this didn't work at first, I was just trying anything, not
knowing whether the fault was with me, the AN1x or the editor.

Anyway, like I say, it all seems to be working now, so I'm sorted.
