I use mine in my home studio and for live gigs. When I play out I use a
Roland xp-30, Korg N1R, and the AN1x. We do some 70s, 80s and current stuff.
The roland and Korg give me all the meat and potatoes sounds but my AN1x is
my secret weapon. Everytime I do Tom sawyer, 1984, Dont forget about me, or
Jump, it's the AN1x. I also use it for a lot of other sounds but always
synth types, not acoustic emulations. I love it and wouldnt ever dream of
getting rid of it. In the Studio, I load it with wierd pads and off-world
strangness sounds and noises. It does some really wacked out stuff that I
wouldnt know how to program but thats why there is an archive of sounds on
this list. You just have to pick through it to come up with your own favorite
custom bank. I keep meaning to post some of my sounds on the list but the
stupid Yahoo username and ID always mess me up and I cant get through to the
list. I wish someone would come up with the sound from Van Halen's " Why
Cant This be Love ". I've come pretty close but I'm not totally happy with
the results. Anyway, this is a great list, lots of nice supportive people.
God Bless, Eric W

Dear listers,

I mainly use my AN1X for techno / trance / goa which it can fill almost any part of, except for the drums (although both BD's and SD's are possible). I use it with Roland MC303, Roland D2, Yamaha DJX and Korg Trinity (for acoustic stuff). Whenever I want a thumpin' bassline, none of the other synths/romplers/softs can match the AN1X. It also has an effect-section which in my opinion is the best I've tried. The Trinity also boasts a powerful effect-loop, but I prefer the AN1X's :-).

Also, when I find THAT bass-sound on my AN1X, I like to turn cutoff all the way up (open filter) and play the upper keys for some typical but effective and penetrating lead techno sounds. The synth also has the capability to generate beautiful sounds ("Earth-Lead", anybody) for those Jean-Michel Jarre / Vangelis moments.

What I don't use it for are those few moments I indulge pop/rock stuff. When I play Jump! by VH or Final Countdown by Europe, I use my Trinity. I'm sorry, but the Jump! patch on the AN1X is nothing like the real thing. The Trinity has a patch that is. And also (forgive me, I am about to swear synthwise), but I have yet to be convinced that the AN1X is a pad's synth. Even my DJX has pads sounding better than the ones I found and tried in the files area. Suggestions to convince me otherwise are most welcome. But hey! I'm certainly no professional piano-player. Even though I know my basic notes, scores and harmonies, I most likely could make much more out of all my synths had I learned to play better and aquired more knowledge about synthesis. Oh well, those who have time are lucky :-)

Final words:

I would never, ever consider to part with my AN1X.

I'll have to get my live bank on the list so you can hear my Jump patch, not
the one that's on the list. I agree that it is a bit anemic. Mine is really
harmonically rich. I just have to figure how to get it on there.

Hi All,

I play mostly funky rock and R&B in a four-piece band. I also do some pickup gigs, which can range from rock to country to wedding-band to R&B. The AN1x finds a place in all of the above. I rarely use it to cover "real instrument" sounds -- I have a ROMpler that does fine for that -- but create leads, brass, and pads, as well as some short sequences to add in the most unlikely places, like Deep Purple's "Woman From Tokyo" and Santana's "Gypsy Queen." I like to use sync'ed waveforms for leads, and I usually prefer the sound of synth brass to a half-baked ROMpler attempt at "real" brass.

One thing that I'm a little surprised at is the number of players who depend on factory patches and sound libraries for their sounds. I guess it comes from playing Minimoogs and Putneys in college, and Korgs and Yamahas soon after -- none of which had any presets -- but I've almost always thrown out 90% of the factory patches on a new synth, and replaced them with my own. Even the ones I keep get a healthy dose of tweaking. I suppose there are many different angles to the term "synth player," but I've always thought that the basic sound one creates is part of the artistic expression obtained from a synth. Certainly, early dabblers in electronic music like Keith Emerson, Jan Hammer, Gary Neumann, and Greg Hawkes are known as much for their unique sounds as for their chops playing/programming the sounds.

How many of you play/program vs. play-only?

Oh, and if you want to fatten the "Jump" patch, just back off on the onboard EQ, and use a tube preamp to fatten the sound.

Regards,

-BW

I would love to hear that patch! I must admit I'm not that much of a synth programmer, maybe relying too much on presets. I mainly stick to tweaking filters and effects...

Hi Group,
Sorry abut the delay on the answer (work sux).

Me and me band are evolving into a prog/symphonic/alternative format in
which the AN1x is relied upon for some important aspects of our sound:
Pads (yep, I can make it replace my JX-10... but sometimes it has to be
paralleled with another synth to enhance the richness)
Leads
Sequences
Noises

The sequences are sometimes subtle and sometimes the driving force.

Wow, I'm surprised. I had this impression that AN1x is only/mostly used for
making dance/electronica type of music etc., ... ;-) .... oh how narrow
minded I seem to be :(

I do pop, rock and even heavy metal with my blue friend ...

Cheers,
TimoS

You're not alone TimoS, I don't make dance/electronica either.
I don't make music... :)
I use my AN1x only for sound design, to create sound textures for example.
But i'm not a sound designer for movies, only for my work: art
installations.
