Programming tips: Morphing and free EG

Programming tips: Morphing and free EG

2003-05-12 by Jerry Aiyathurai

I was wondering if any of you would care to share your programming
tips for use of the morph feature and the free EG.

Morph - I have a number of patches with it of course. I still don't
have a strong theory on how to use it. I've used it for filter cut-
off and sync pitch and it works well here. I have had marginal
success with FM. Do you use it systematically, or do you use a random
process? Are there specific parameters that morph well together?

Free EG - I thought this was key feature when I bought the synth. I
find myself using it less and less. I've modulated fine pitch of the
oscillator (very slightly) to emulate analog drift. And I've created
a spike of sync pitch to create a sharp attack, like a guitar. But I
haven't done anything beyond these two things.

Any tips?

Jerry

I find it interesting to make a copy of Scene 1 in Scene 2 with not
too subtle changes for Scene 2 in VCA or VCF env parameters,
filter settings and mod depth settings. I don't use the Morph
control as a make shift patch select I prefer to use it for real time
changes while playing: perhaps a swell using the Mod Wheel
during sustain chords. Try layering percussive type sounds with
non-percussive type sounds.

Try using the FreeEG on the VCO Edge settings for continuously
variable waveforms or the Sync Pitch settings to emulate
sweeping a wavetable. The most obvious choices would be the
Filter Cutoff or the Variation Effect parameter.

I would use velocity to simulate "a spike of sync pitch to create a
sharp attack, like a guitar" rather than the FreeEG but if it works
for you...
