AN1X or Korg Z1?

AN1X or Korg Z1?

2003-09-08 by Bob Thomas

Hi all

I'm a new member and my first question is aimed at those of you who have
used an AN1X and a Korg Z1; is the Z1 "twice" the AN1X? What I mean is, at
the moment in the UK an AN1X goes for 200 to 300ukp used, whilst a Korg Z1
is 500 to 600ukp. The reason I'm asking is this - over the last 20 years
I've owned several 'classic' synths including (deep breath!): SC Pro-1,
Roland SH-101, Korg Poly800, SC Six-Track, Yamaha DX-21, Casio CZ-101, Casio
CZ-5000, SC Prophet-5, Ensoniq ESQ-1, break of 13 years - then - Korg
Triton, Yamaha SY-85 and last year a Novation Nova II keyboard!

However I decided in January 2003 to give up on the hardware and go
software, due to always sequencing via PC and PITA synth definitions,
multitimbrality issues etc. etc.! Anyway, I bought an Edirol PCR-50
controller keyboard to use with Cakewalk Sonar and recently, Propellerhead's
Reason. I find it brilliant, the range of sounds, ease of use etc. but I
miss the 'instant on-ness' of a synth!! Also I may be gigging in the near
future (gulp!).

OK, so here's what I need to know; my music playing 'style' ranges from
'dirty hammond' type rock stuff (live) to trance (home using Sonar &
Reason). Taking into consideration live use and use as a controller keyboard
for Sonar/Reason, which is the better suited? AN1X or Z1?

I know this is a subjective area "is A better than B" but if anyone out
there who's owned both could give his/her findings, I'd be most grateful.

Thanks in advance,

Bob

Hello Bob,

I have both the Korg Z1 and the Yamaha AN1x. They're both great synths and
both could be fine for your purpose.

But I think the AN1x could be a 'better' choice because:

- It weighs a lot less than a Z1 so it's easier to carry it around.
- All knobs can be used to modulate your softsynths
- It's cheaper (and today they're really cheap)
- It is easier and faster to create your own sounds because of the easy-to
use interface, the Z1 has a lot more to offer in this department but is also
more difficult and you have to like digging around in several menus to get
to its inner guts.

Thanks for both your replies - I've decided to go for an AN1X, in the
New Year if I can find one in the UK at the right price - seen a few
going recently for about £200 :)
