- If you want to use a VSTi softsynth as beatbox,
check out fxpansion's DR-008. It's marvelous. You get
both synthesized and sampled drums. Of course, it's
not a fully fledged beatbox like ReBirth: it doesn't
have a sequencer. But you can use it as a plug-in in
say, Cubase.

- A few years ago Zoom had a cheap hardware beatbox.

I think they made the DR-005 (precursor to the DR-008) freeware,
didn't they?

And then there's Loopazoid (Mac/Win)

http://www.nexoft.net/

and LinPlug has something too...

Wow you really think the an1x is better than the ms2k. Hard for me to think that but I don't have a an1x to compare.
Why did you choose the px-7 and not the el-7 or the other one?

  I just bought a E-mu PX-7 to compliment my An1x. You can't beat the
price that these things are going for these days. $499 brand new for
the PX-7. Plus, you can expand the PX-7 with up to three additional
ROMS boards. I just finished downsizing my gear again, and the An1x
won over the Korg MS2000. One of them had to go and the MS2000 was
  the one to go.

So here is the hardware equipment line-up as of today:

  Yamaha An1x
  Korg Karma w/EXB-008
  Korg Wavestation
  E-mu PX-7

P.S. Do check out the blowout prices of the E-mu PX-7 and also the
  ROMS.

Hi Dale,

I liked the MS2000. It was just that I couldn't see keeping both the
An1x and the MS2000. They both were similiar in creating VA sounds.
The two reasons for keeping the An1x were 1) 10 note polyphony vs 4
note polyphony on the MS2000 and 2)Guitar Center offered me $400
dollars for the MS2000 as opposed to $50 dollars for the An1x. It
just made more sense for me to keep the An1x.

I chose the PX-7 because of the price. The XL-7 and MP-7, which are
harder to find new these days, still cost more money. All three units
are identical except for the installed ROM. I figured that I would
get a new PX-7 and I can purchase the MP-7 and/or XL-7 ROMS later on.

I have the an1x and the ms2k, I like them a lot I like the fact that I can get a very dirty sound out of my an1x, and my ms2k is much cleaner sounding. And If you really want to get dirty go for the RED SOUND eleVAta!

My band member who bough the XL-7 said he has plans for the other ROMS and is now in search/purchase mode as he can to get them.

10 poly is hard to beat, this is very true. I have learned to deal with 4 on the MS2k. Last year I choose to buy the Alesis ION to supplement the MS2k. I also purchased a Chameleon as well. One of these days the funds and a AN1x will cross my path. I given the thought of buying a ANX card for my S-80 but after many posts here and other sites, I think the best thing to do is get a AN1x. Till then, I can't compare the two. I do know there is a difference between the MS2k and the ION. I can make them both sound very similar but the trick is to make them both play off each other. Right now I am laying down tracks using them both. These tracks then head to my band member for him to add or take away. Then the cycle repeats a bit. As I am told, he is spending many sleepless night right now with his new synth. Last word I heard, he really likes it.

I think you made a great deal. $50 for the An1x, that says volumes there. I am not sure which way I would have taken that. Then $400 for the MS2k. I think perhaps demand is driving that. I even thought about buying another MS2k myself to synch them up (they can play even and odd notes to increase the poly, that is in the programming of them). Like I mention, I went the ION way( I have a long ways yet to go with it as well as I am no MS2k master yet either).

Thanks for the from the heart response. Only makes me want a AN1x that much more. I have a spot for it. It can take the place of the PSR-520 on the top rack. I seldom use it much anymore for midi input or my wife. She takes the S-80 now for almost all her work. The PSR-520 doesn't even get used for her gigs anymore. She has me lug the S-80. Ahh... I am dreaming right now.... ;-)

The only thing and will be the only thing, I ever bought from RedSound is the DarkStar. I use it. I also use it for it's joy stick to input to other devices. I have some fun with it. It finds it way in the mix here and there. I know it doesn't compare to the eleVAta but it serves it purpose.

Hi Dale,

Thanks for the response. I was actually looking at the Alesis ION a
few months ago. I really enjoyed playing around with it at the local
Guitar Center. Of course, I didn't have $800 dollars to purchase
one, so I don't have one. Guitar Center told me that the reason they
would only give me $50 dollars for the An1x is that their resale
value on the An1x is virtually nothing. I wasn't about to give it
away. I guess the MS2000 is still in demand. I hope I won't miss it.
I really wanted to get a groovebox/drum machine/sequencer though.

Does your band member like the XL-7? It seems like some of the ROMS
are going out of production, so I may have to look to buy some
sooner than a wanted to. So far, I enjoying fooling around with the
PX-7. The only problem now is finding the time to really start
diving into the manual. I'm still trying to find time to learn about
the whole Karma function on my Korg Karma. Also, I still didn't even
get the chance to start looking into making sounds on my Wavestation
keyboard. The nice thing about the An1x is that it's pretty easy to
create or change sounds. The MS2000 was even better!

Talk to you soon,
Domenic

Have your band member check out:

also eBay too...

The short and quick of it: MS2000 = prettier sound, AN1x = warmer/grittier (granted
this is an over simplification but you get the idea.) Your ION covers much more sonic
territory than an AN1x but the AN1x can at least offer a Prophet 5 knock off the ION
doesn't (at least until Alesis updates the filters agin, maybe?) You can always pop for
a Pro-53 softsynth instead.

And I think you're right regarding the PLG150-AN card - there has been a
disproportionate number of posts on AN1x-list from befuddle user's with PLG cards.
Great idea on Yamaha's part but they appear to have missed the boat in terms of ease
of use. Kind of surprising given the effort that went into simplify the UI of the AN1x,
A3000, EX5.7, etc. that were all released in the same time frame...

>

True of any synth - I can find my way around the AN1x backwards and forwards after
having owned it so long but I still feel there's plenty yet to be exploited (FreeEG
anyone?) Gotta admit to some AN1x fatigue though - lots of other synths sound have
become more appealing to me in the last year or so.

> Thanks for the from the heart response. Only makes me want a AN1x that much
more.

Why don't you buy Bruce's AN1x?

hahaha ha LOL

Jon

p.s. - Dale, can you email me offline:off the top of your head, is there a reinitialize
sequence for the ION . The floor model at the local GC was FUBAR when I checked it
out today...
