Transpose using CCs?

Transpose using CCs?

2004-11-03 by Timo Sandholm

Hi Group,

I have a midi pedal which is capable of sending midi note and CC messages
and if I recall correctly sysex is supported as well. Anyway. I would like
to use it as bass pedals so to say play notes with my feet while I'm playing
guitar. I would like to set my pedal so that there are notes assigned to the
pedals and then there should be transpose pedals as well. So the question is
can I send somekind of CC string to my AN1X to transpose the tone generator
so if I send C3 to AN1x it will play C2 etc.?

Cheers,
TimoS

Hi Timo,

Hope you've been well...tried a couple of idea's and here's what I found:

The Kbd Trans option under the UTILITY/SETUP menu will send and receive using a sysEx
string of 67 with a value of 16. Unfortunately this means you can not make a sudden
change in Pitch at note - you must send it a string of 67 16 for each cent that you wish to
offset from the base pitch :-/ Not well suited to real time playing.

However, if you send a single PitchBend event with a value of 0 being equal to maximum
Pitch Down, 64 being center and 127 maximum Pitch Up you can affect a sudden change
at note on as you intend. Keep in mind you must follow the initial PitchBend event with
another to reset the note to base pitch. Follow?

Timo,

I've wrung out my brain the past few days considering some way of pulling off
what you need. (My band's got a lot of knowledge/experience in using MIDI
live.)

Unfortunately, I'd have to conclude that you'll need much more horsepower to
pull off this trick. What you're proposing is that some notes of the pedals
will merely send notes and some other notes will force a pitch change, right?
The AN doesn't have enough MIDI implementation to split up incoming note on
messages to activate different features of the synth. Maybe you could pull off
something fancy with a split keyboard patch, but I don't think it's smart enough
to map pitch change only to one scene. I've got the data manual open here, and
there is an effect, Pitch Change, which can be controlled in the matrix. The
matrix has "keytrack" as a parameter which could be used to control the Pitch
Change function. I've used the keytrack mapped to the stereo pan with great
success. Since my gear is packed away at the moment I can't experiment on this
for you. I'd personally use the lazy man's way of getting one huge amount of
MIDI horsepower in a single unit: a DMC MX-8 MIDI patchbay. The number of ways
you can mess with the MIDI stream in this box is amazing. Splits, transposes,
filters... it's got a lot. It can't generate sysex, though. If you ultimately
need to do sysex stuff you might consider a laptop on stage with a software
sequencer. It's becoming very common to do this because the reliability has
come up to usable standards for live shows. So my answer to your problem is
probably, no, it can't be done without external processing.

Re: [AN1x] Transpose using CCs?

Hi Ed and Jon,

Actually what Jon suggested is working perfectly, so I can program my pedal
so that I can get notes F, A, G, C then I program one pedal as OctaveDown
(Pitch bend 0) and one Pedal as OctaveReset (PitchBend 64).

Now I can play the notes in verse normally and when comes the middle section
of song which needs the same notes played octave lower, I just hit
OctaveDown button and it works perfectly. Back to the verse again and I hit
OctaveReset pedal and continue playing using the same octave as in the
beginning. So thank you Jon.

Yes, the one thing I can remember from your website was definetly the
diagram of your midi connections ;-) ...

Maybe you can share some tips using MIDI live. Because situation with my
band is currently changing, so we have been playing together with sequencer,
and found out that it's actually quite boring and now we would like to start
doing everything live - You know it is annoying when you are playing guitar
and singing same time and then you realise that there is nothing to do with
your feet during the effect change pauses :-D ...

Actually how do you use samplers live? Are you playing phrases/loops from
there, if so how do you synchronise the drummer and loops?

TimoS
