the manual explains how to record real-time knob movements.  My 
question is, can I play the recorded movements?  And if so, how?

The eg automatically gets associated with the patch and plays with 
the patch. In the synth's Free Eg section you can set the Free EG to 
trigger from keyboard (note-on) or midi or both. ( You need to save 
the patch to save the EG.)

My advice if you have a pc or mac with midi interface is to Get Gary 
gregson's editor (AN1Xedit) from the Egroups site 
(http://www.egroups.com/files/AN1x-list/) and draw them by hand. The 
visual editor makes things really easy, and it makes it possible to 
visualize (how two sweeps cross each other for example) things in a 
way that is impossible to do on the synth itself. The editor is 
really intuitive.
