Newbie aboard

2006-02-01 by instrujunkie

Hi there, got my AN1x a few weeks ago. I originally intented my
brother to buy one. Therefore- he had asked me "which one"- I had a
number of demo tunes of the most different synths on my computer. I
blindly listened to them. And most of the times I found myself
asking"Wo, what is that" it was the AN1x. Really an ultimately cruel
loud machine. I'm lucky not to give a damn about A/B comparisons. So
who cares whether it sounds analogue...? It's loud, mean, aggressive.
My congratulations to ev'rybody who bought it. I'm very curious what
to find here.

Welcome

I bought my AN1X because I needed a velocity sensitive controller for
my Vintage Keys (I was using a Korg DW 6000)and Sam Ash had a massive
clearance sale.

I play in a bar band and a garage band. I am primarily a harmonica
player. The garage band plays a lot of fuzzed out blues and funk
originals. The AN1x fits in nicely. I can make cool new weird sounds,
but they still sound analog. With a lot of help from the list and Bruce
Wahler I can now switch back and forth from the AN1X to the Vintage
Keys through the magic of MIDI.

With some time, the morph feature, and the ribbon controller, you can
create a wall of sound that is just wonderfully sick.

Hi Tom !
congratulations and welcome to the club ! I bought mine second hand 2
years ago at a bargain price* , and i'm still glad to play and search
for new sounds . It's an understated instrument but reliable and
powerful if you go "inside the beast" . Don't let be fooled by the
(!\ufffdX~!) front panel and the awful routing matrix : relax , take the
handbook(s) . Some interesting features : you can use it as well as a
control keyboard for an expander by affecting the "right" controllers
numbers to the knobs (of course they don't act no more on the AN1X
itself) ; the arpeggiator - sequencer can be affected to an other MIDI
channel ; the "free E.G." is a very powerful tool to make custom
envelopes or LFO waveforms .... You can go: to
http://www.deepsonic.ch/deep/htm/an1x.php to see what this guy does with
only an AN1X and a multitrack recorder (no outboard effects , no other
synth ...) , really impressive !
One last thing about "analog sounds" : what most of the people have
heard are only records , not the "raw" instruments . That means a lot of
post mastering , added effects and so on . For their live performances
the pioneers of the analog era used a lot of vintage (of course !)
effects such as tape echo , Leslie speakers , spring reverbs and some
guitar pedals (phaser , wah ..) , these dinosaurs were not stereo ! And
very unreliable ....

* Now the prices on the second hand market are rising a lot ...
