Since you're already familiar with microcontrollers, just dive right 
in and get busy learning the similarities and differences.  If you 
intend to program in assembly language, download AVR Studio from the 
Atmel site.  If you intend to program in C, download WinAVR.

You'll want to purchase some sort of development device.  Either the 
AVR Butterfly or the Atmel STK500 are a good place to start but 
there are others as well.

If you want a little more "hand holding" go to amazon.com and search 
the book section using the keyword AVR.  There are several books 
available to help you learn to use the AVR.
