Try the new version of the in circuit programmer, the AVRISP mkII. It's about 35 bucks and uses a USB interface. If you can find an older version of the serial interface AVRISP, they work quite well with a USB/Serial adapter. Problem with the ISPs is if you have a brain fart and program your fuses incorrectly, thereby locking yourself out of the chip, you might have a problem re-programming your controller. It might be a good idea to have some extra chips on hand while you're first getting started.
