If you can get your hands on an STK500, you have a powerful learning tool for beginners. You can program simple tasks like reading pushbuttons and lighting LED's and then get them to work right on the board. I'd recommend this for someone who doesn't have much experience with microcontrollers. Some of my first projects with it were a little more advanced, but I was only new to AVR's, not to microcontrollers in general.
