Thanks for the input, everyone.
I added an additional start command (in CodeVision AVR, this is: i2c_start()
) and that did the trick.
I also made the connections between the ATMega128 and the i2c slave chip as
short as possible.
It works perfectly now.
The Codevision i2c functions are pretty slick.
