The original code from smileymicros was written on an earlier
version of winavr. Some of the stuff has changed or has been
deprecated.

The code will work with the version of winavr supplied on his
website. As you become more competent in C, you should be able
to take the code to newer versions or even different compilers.

All part of the learning method...may be...
