?? You DID say 4 MHz before, which is it? Are you using
a crystal for the clock? If not you can pretty much
forget about decent and stable comms.

How is the USART initialized?

Are you trying to disguise you message?

What's wrong with:
message:
.db "Press space key to continue", $0A,$0A,$0D,$00

Unless you are using a very old chip you may also want to try:
lpm rx,z+

where rx is any unused register.
