There are actually a few applications where I use a PIC instead of an AVR (the 10F200 is nice). IF Atmel gets bought out, it would be stupid for them to discontinue AVR's though. When a product is selling, you don't stop making it. Hopefully the only thing that might come out of it is better support for the AVR's.
