I bought a clamshell-type ZIF socket for a TQFP-32 (for use with the mega328P-AU) from West Coast Engineering (http://www.westcoasteng.com). I believe would be compatible with the mega8. The socket is a Yamaichi p/n IC51-0324-1498 and the price was about $40. Unfortunately, they have a minimum order amount of $100 or $150 (I don't remember which) which I met by buying some other Atmel parts that I needed anyway. You may be able to find the same Yamaichi socket elsewhere. I have purchased other Yamaichi TQFP sockets from aprilog.com but they didn't have the 32-pin version in stock when I needed it.
