I'd once proposed stream level monitoring by using a roller pump to smoothly push air into a pipe that was anchored to the bottom. The idea being that the continuous flow of air keeps the pipe clear of cruft, and is pretty benign to the sensor. You have to subtract outside air pressure, but that's just one more sensor that we needed anyway. -- There is no computer problem which cannot be solved by proper application of a sufficiently large hammer.
