Why bother building when Atmel will sell an AVRISP2 for $35 that does
everything, and USB too?

A little less polished, the AVR Dragon will do ISP, JTAG ICE, and
DebugWire ICE for $50 on the smaller AVRs. Also via USB.

IMO one is better off spending one's time building product than dorking
around making tools.
