(Do you have a schematic?) You mentioned LEDs on the AVRSIP. What colour are they? Frankly I do not take much notice of them (when it just works) but there is a detailed description of the status leds for the AVRISP in the AVR Studio 'AVR Tools' Help file. Do you have an oscilloscope? If so check you might check then signals coming from the programmer. I am stumped. You need to first determine whether it's the AVRISP or the target hardware (FWIW my gut feel is that it's not the ISP). Do you have other target hardware you can try with? What part if the world are you located in? I am in Sydney AU, you are welcome to drop into my office and we can spend a few minutes with my AVRISP to check your hardware.
