16 channel I2C LED driver

2010-08-28 by Chuck Hackett

I have done a lot of searching for an LED driver with:
- I2C interface
- 16 channels (or, two 8 channel devices if 1/2 the price of a 16 channel device)
- 10 to 30 ma per channel
- Individual PWM adjustable constant current on a per channel basis
- Ability to identify fault (open/shorted) on individual channels (i.e.: not
'global')
- 5v logic supply
- DIP or surface mount I can deal with (TSSOP, etc.)

I am looking at using the TI TLC59116
(http://focus.ti.com/lit/ds/symlink/tlc59116.pdf) which seams like a very capable
device.

Anybody have another favorite I should look at?

The "individual channel PWM" knocks out a lot of devices I looked at ...

I could look at using serial-shift type interface if it was lots cheaper but I'm
thinking that I may have other I2C devices on the board later.

The TLC59116 is $3.92 at Newark (only supplier I found with stock).
