I don't agree with your statement that Digi-Key is not an "indicator." I
know it P.O.'ed my Atmel rep and local distributor that I looked at DK
prices, they said as much. Told them they could be upset if they wanted
to but with DK I knew I was looking at prices that I could have parts in
hand in 2 days. That I could have a quote in hand in 10 minutes. If the
distributor could not beat that then it wasn't my problem. We did get a
nice discount under the DK prices.

Prices for Microchip MCUs were essentially the same at DK as through
distributorship, making the PIC very expensive with respect to the AVR.

We were buying about 10,000 per year at the time through the distributor.
