Thank you for the response.  I wound up finding a $10 player that takes an
SD card and uses serial commands to play back any track on demand.  Since I
only need a very low number of these, this is a better solution than
anything that requires work on my part.

for the first way you can simply use any VLSI chips to play your files ( or
record perhaps ), its very simple & cheap way to solve this problem, this
chips already used in portable media players & can handle mp3, wma, wav,
midi, oog vorbis ...etc files.
you can use many source codes ( c or basic ) for this purpose by search in
internet
 
the second way is little harder & cheaper than first, you can use sd or mmc
card for store your sound files & use every avr chips with enough ram ( such
as mega 64 ) & convert your file to lookup & then play With PWM output,
 
if you are not pro in codewrinting i suggest you to use first Way.

I'm working on a project that requires several minutes of good quality sound
playback. The ideal thing would be to control an Ipod or similar player. A
device that can store up to about 12 sound clips of up to about a minute
each is what's desired. The sound quality desired is about Ipod level so a
lot of the cheap and easy sound chips are ruled out on that basis.

Quantity is very low, so cost isn't a huge issue. Under $100 would be fine.

Does anyone have any ideas for how to deliver this?
