Atmel AVR based Arduino boards have become very popular over the past few years. A good get your feet wet starter is the Arduino UNO. It only use 18 of the Mega 328 I/O pins, 6 can be used as analog in too. It can be powered by an external wall wort (those little power supplies the size of your fist that plug in to a "wall" outlet with a cable to power equipment) or USB, which is used to not only used to power the Arduino, it is also used to program and read info coming from the Arduino.
Then there is the Arduino Mega 2560 that has 54 digital I/Os and 16 analog inputs.--
