I would heartily recommend Delphi, I've been using it since D1 after dumping
VB in disgust at its lack of performance and low level access. Delphi
produces fast, small (most of my apps still fit on a floppy) standalone exes
(no vbrunxx.dlls!!!) and can do just about anything that VC++ can do.
I'm onto D7 now and regularly develop apps with hardware access, interfacing
to com ports is trivial (there are some great freeware components) and lpt
can be accessed directly using inline assembler (I also use a some free
components to allow low level access unde win2k/xp). USB access with FTDI's
chip works brilliantly with their free drivers.

Don't be tainted by the popularity of MS products, a LOT of
professionals/companies develop using Delphi.
