vnn, as another somewhat recent beginner, let me make a couple of suggestions, the bascom avr suite is really great to start out with, if you know C, then WinAVR might be the way to go, but if not, it's a whole lot easier to troubleshoot basic code. Since you are probably running this around some piece of hardware you plan on building, it's somewhat easier if you know your code works. If you do know C, then that may verywell be a good place to stay, but if not, I would suggest you start with basic, and eventually try to learn assembly, if your going to learn a new language anyways, you might as well learn the one that is going to help you the most.
