More or less I agree with what Dave, Michael and Don have said. Let
contribute the following.

You did not mention what hardware you plan on using to program and/or
test and/or use the mega128 in. If you have not already came up with
what you will be using I suggest the STK501 (which will accomidate
the 64 lead TQFP that the 128 can be purchased in) plugged into the
STK500 (which supports the other AVRs and the STK501). This is
because one of the hardest things for me in starting out is getting
all the hardware and software working for that FIRST program.

To program the 128 and other AVRs WinAVR C free. Both BasCom AVR and
CodeVision AVR have free demos you can try out. Like said
before "what language are you most farmiliar with?" If you are new to
all of them probably Basic would be your best choice. I think most of
us would say that C is more robust that Basic but it is also harder
to learn.

Also, there is always AVR Studio. I good ol assembly but when it
comes down to it Studio is the definitive for programming AVRs and it
is free. I'm sure some people will disagree with me but sooner or
later you should know how to use Studio even if you program in one of
the other languages. Because you are working with a megaAVR you need
version 4.

started to learn to use it. Somebody suggested me to use ICC-avr.
