Alex,

Many thanks for your help.  I did download AVRdude -
the Win32 version comes as a binary, so I didn't have
to concern myself with compiling it.

I found that my failures came from several bad
components, including a possible bad 2343.

Look forward to more Newby questions in the near
future!  <scowl>
