Ok, I checked the data sheet.  I couldn't find anything regarding the
bandgap reference on the tiny26.  Where is it?

Nope, check the datasheet, the reference is not that great.
No way it's cheaper to calibrate something than use an external
reference. You have to have a known temperature, set the system up,
calibrate it, store the calibration value in your firmware etc. The
labour cost alone is worth $$$, a precision reference may only cost you
a few dollars. And as I mentioned before, if you want to calibrate it
properly you have to calibrate it over the entire operational
temperature range - crazy.
