Generally, a device that uses SD card can use mmc but not vice versa. This is because, SD card has an extra pin which I think is for security purpose. Thus, if you put in a SD card into a mmc slot (which is one pin less), you won't be able to read it.
 
Another important thing to look out for is, SD card is thicker than mmc. Hence, even from physical dimension point of view, I don't think you can even fit a SD card into a mmc slot. This happened to my siemen SL45 phone. It uses mmc card. I can't even get the SD slot into it.
 
Be careful cos' some company is producing SD card that is as slim as mmc card. Eg. Kingmax. Recently, my friend put my Kingmax SD card 1 GB into his Nokia 6230 phone but, the phone cannot recognise the SD card. Upon close inspection, the SD card has one extra pin compared to mmc card.
