Bernd; IIRC, the RC servos take a 0.5ms to 1.5ms pulse input at about TTL levels. If you're really strapped for power, you could always power it down until the reading needs to change. The pointer could be something simple made from pastic, like a disk with the 'needle' drawn on with a marker. Naturally, once you're convinced it will work you could fab up something more elegant.
