Atmel changed a bunch of stuff and broke the various download tools that
come with the GCC tool chain. The interim solution is to get a previous
version of studio (3.56, for example) and go into the stk500 directory and
figure out how to download that firmware. It isn't hard, but it has been a
while since I did it so I can't give you specific instructions. You use
"avrprog" and the bin file in the directory.
Cheers!

Subject: [AVR-Chat] STK500 Communication Error?
I bought a new STK500 starter kit and the "Embedded C Programming and the
Atmel AVR" book last week. I have the attached the STK500 and it downloaded
the firmware update with no problems so I know the connection works. I'm
working through Appendix B "Getting Started with CodeVisionAVR and the
STK500" in the book but when using the CodeVisionAVR IDE to program the
90s8515 controller I get the "STK500/AVRISP communication error" message.
I've checked the possible problems as described in the error message:
- The STK500 power supply is turned on, the 3 led's light up.
- The programmer type in Settings->Programmer is set to Atmel
STK500/AVRISP
- The COM Port is set in Settings->Programmer, I have both COM 1 and COM 2
available on one computer and COM 4 available on another. I'm getting the
same error on both machines.
I'm sure I'm probably overlooking something simple but haven't found the
problem yet. Any suggestions?
