hi jim,
i had the same problem as you 5 years ago when i started AVR
with STK200 starter kit and 8515 (the old one) yC.
I only know assembler and would like to learn C.
Perhaps we can change knowledge.
my projekts:
- disco light for parties and small bands on stage
- analog digital clock with 300 leds (muxed led-drive)
- moving letters panel (dono the original description)
  for display messages (512 leds) in a truck. (mad truckers...)

my original language is german as these books.
I have programmed a "starter head" i use everytime i start
