Also you might want to have a look at the VFDs: 
http://www.noritake-elec.com/transless.htm  
I've not used them, but they look nice, and Farnell stock them: 
882940 and 882951.  They may be smaller characters, but the clarity 
might be better.  

A note for the Everbouquet displays - a contrast pot is really 
important.  Some displays I've used are fine with Vo at 0V, but not 
these ones.
