For dip or other socket type?

  In the past I've just soldered a machine pin socket onto the bottom pins 
of a zif socket so that I could plug it into a regular dip socket.
  The sockets on the stk500 are pretty close together, you may have to 
stack a couple of extra machine pin sockets onto the bottom of the zip to 
get the height up enough so that it clears the other parts on the board. 
Allows you to move the zif sockets around to other projects without too 
much wearing of the soldered pc mount socket.

In a real production environment, I might make something more permanent. 
For normal development I really try to use isp where ever possible.
