When driving LEDs from AVRs I never look past N-channel logic MOSFETs such as FDV303N (680mA,smd) or ZVN4310A (900mA,eline). They work well within the frequency requirements of LED PWM drive and can be connected directly to AVR output pins (oh, and they don't blow up that easily).
