No so much hard as I wasn't completely sure it had got there until I 
successfully read some fuses on a Mega8.  After getting IE6 and the 
rest of the OS up-to-date and putting AvrStudio 4.12.460, I was 
expecting to just plug in and go.  No.  When you plug it in, when it 
asks for the driver, I think it's the first option (where Windows 
displays the most suitable driver, I think.)  It should pop-up with 
an AVRISP MKII message.
What I did find was that the first time we connected to the 
programmer, it worked but reported that writing to the flash had 
failed, and it seemed to complete the programming once the fuses tab 
had been selected.  Successive programming operations were okay until 
the connection was closed and reopened.  Sometimes the status light 
on two of the programmers I've tested didn't light at all, regardless 
of what they were or weren't connected to.
When I put the first one on a machine with XP and the latest service-
packed AvrStudio, it asked me to do a firmware upgrade (this has 
killed off many of our MKI AVRISPs.)  It asks you to power-cycle the 
programmer, which means removing the USB cable.  This leads to "found 
new hardware" messages in the middle of the upgrade process and 
needed the PC rebooted before it was happy.  Now everything is 
working fine, which is nice, as we've now bought eleven of them...
