A few suggestions Ian.

1. This discussion is probably better placed on the ZBasic forums (

2. If you have a ZX-24 all you need is power and a RS232 cable.

3. If you have a ZX-40/ZX-44 then you have a couple of choices. Either 
build a custom test circuit or breadboard everything. The additional 
circuitry consists of a crystal, SPI EEPROM and a RS232 level shifter 
and a DTR to Reset conversion for downloading. See

4. The STK500 is probably not the right place to load a ZX-40. It can be 
done but probably not worth it (and you certainly never want to 
reprogram the flash otherwise you will lose the ZBasic runtime.
