Mike thanks for the info re the ZBasic. I agree that I should be taking this discussion over to the other forum. Will do in the future. I guess the thread only got this far because it is in the raw, part of the Atmel family. Looks like a good chip to do quick development and floating point stuff  that my Oopic can't do and also from a time point of view, I know VB quite well.
