Before I would buy such an instrument I'd have to be sure that I had full documentation of any over-the-wire protocols so that even if the instrument were orphaned I could write my own software. For that matter, having the sources for a library that supported the full protocol set would be a very good thing. Better yet would be to have such a library as well as sources for the PC end.
