I think I can put the pseudo-connector on the break-off handling bar I 
will have along the edge of the PCB anyway. So it doesn't cost anything.

The idea of trying to clip things onto an SO8 doesn't fill me with joy.

You didn't answer the bit about "would I even want to go back to 6-wire 
mode" - can I just blow this fuse, and break of the bit of PCB with the 
6-pin connector on?
