Thanks Hans.

My immediate problem is that my existing host has spare USB ports, a 
serial port I COULD free up, but no external SPI ports.

On the other hand it does have a place on the PCB for a CAN controller 
using the AT91CAN, but I have zero working s/w for that at present.... 

I just thought LIN bus looked good, especially since for 80 cents I can 
buy a combo transceiver and 5V regulator. And the s/w is simple serial 
port, which even I should be able to do.
