You want to look into 7-seg display drivers. Maxim makes a number of
them as I am sure other companies do. The nice thing about many of
them is they can be interefaced to your AVR serially and have
intensity control built in. So not only will these chips solve your
LED brightness adjustment issue, but since it is serial connection to
the AVR, you would regain a number of I/O pins on your AVR.

Start by looking at something like the MAX7219 (that one I think the
intensity it set by an external resistor rather than by internal
controls, but it will give you an idea of what is out there.
